Client Project: Pet App

In Brief

  • Type: Flutter App
  • Time Period: 2022
  • Client Project

The Project

The goal of this project was to create an additional sales channel for pet food. For this purpose, a mobile app was developed that offers the right product based on pet data.

To make the app interesting for the target group, special attention was also paid to educational information about the respective pet. One of the challenges of the project was to make entering the pet’s data as simple as possible and to reward a complete profile.

Furthermore, there was a special focus on the creative design of the app, which was implemented through an image-rich UI design.

My Role in the Project

For this project, I was hired by an agency to lead the development of the app. Internally, the team had previously specialized in web development, which is why the Flutter project represented a technological innovation for the team.

This included a variety of tasks for me:

  • Building competencies in implementing Flutter apps
  • Planning and designing the software architecture and deciding on the use of libraries
  • Implementation of central elements in the app
  • Connecting the app to the client’s online shop
  • Supporting project management regarding app-specific processes (e.g., handling app stores)
  • Knowledge transfer on deployment and operations of apps (fastlane, GitHub Actions)
  • Close collaboration with the design team providing assistance regarding the differences between web and app development
  • Involvement in communication with the client to develop new ideas

The 3 Most Important Insights for Future Projects

A Clear App Structure is Essential for Junior Developers

For less experienced colleagues, it was enormously helpful to have a sample implementation of a problem. This allowed them to quickly work on a topic independently according to a certain pattern.

Web Design is Not the Same as App Design

For designers, it’s important to not treat apps the same as websites. Often there are different concepts to consider, such as back navigation or image embedding.

Knowledge Transfer Can Also Work Remotely

Even though this project was conducted completely remotely, the knowledge transfer worked very well. For me, it was important to respond quickly to inquiries and be available for video calls.
